Eight of the best Tunisia excursions below start at your door, in an air-conditioned car with a local driver, and none needs more than 2 h 30 on the road each way from Hammamet. Several reach UNESCO World Heritage sites. The ninth, Douz and Tozeur in the Sahara, is on the list because it belongs there, but we do not run it yet.

Tunisia holds some of the best Roman ruins outside Italy. The amphitheatre of El Jem seated around 35,000 people and still stands almost whole. Dougga is a full Roman town on a hill, with a theatre, a capitol and quiet paved streets. Carthage pairs well with Sidi Bou Said, so you see ruins and a village in the same day.
Not every good day out is about ruins. Sidi Bou Said is a cliff-top village of white walls and blue doors above the Gulf of Tunis. Cap Bon mixes the fort of Kelibia, the cliffs of El Haouaria and clear water. For the shortest drive, Sousse and Monastir sit 30 minutes away, with a medina, a ribat and the sea.
Some days you only want the morning. Friguia Park is 30 minutes from Hammamet, and children love it. The Zriba trip climbs to an old Berber village near Zaghouan, 45 minutes away. Both leave the afternoon free for the pool.

Start from what you care about most, then check the drive. As a rule, book the longer days early in your stay, while you have energy. If you only have time for one, choose Kairouan and El Jem, because nothing else in the country compares.

Douz is the gateway to the dunes, and Tozeur is the oasis town near Chott el Djerid. Both are more than 5 hours from Hammamet by road, so a day trip means 10 hours or more in a car. Plan them as a 2 or 3 day trip, and use your day excursions for the north and the centre.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with warm days and small crowds. July and August get very hot inland, so we leave early and plan shade. Keep a little cash in dinars, since card machines at the sites are not always reliable.
