Port El Kantaoui is a resort built from scratch in the 1970s on a plan inspired by Andalusian medinas. Its marina holds several hundred pleasure boats and its pedestrian lanes lined with bougainvillea create a distinctive Mediterranean atmosphere. It is a gentle, pleasant way to begin the day before diving into the historic sites of Sousse and Monastir.

The medina of Sousse is one of the best preserved in North Africa. The ribat, a military watchtower built in 821, has looked out over the sea from the heights of the medina ever since. The Kasbah museum holds remarkable Roman mosaics, including the famous head of Medusa. The Great Mosque, with its bays and inner courtyard, is a model of Aghlabid restraint.

Monastir is a town heavy with history and symbols. Its ribat, built in 796, is among the best preserved in the Islamic world and has served as a set for major historical films. The mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the first president of independent Tunisia, is a white marble monument dominating the town. The medieval town by the sea offers exceptional views over the Mediterranean.
