In reality, the Dougga Bulla Regia day trip is our longest day out, and one of the most striking. Two complete Roman towns, with no modern city built on top, in the hills of the Tell. Here is what matters before you book.

Dougga is arguably the most spectacular archaeological site in North Africa. Perched at 600 metres on a hill overlooking the Oued Khalled valley, the Roman city is remarkable both for its state of preservation and for its natural setting. The capitol, with three Corinthian columns still standing, is the emblematic image of ancient Tunisia. The Roman theatre still hosts summer performances. The Libyco-Punic mausoleum, dating from the 2nd century BC, testifies to the cultural mixing of Berbers and Carthaginians.

Bulla Regia is unique in the Roman Mediterranean: its inhabitants developed anti-heat architecture by building their villas with underground storeys, to enjoy the natural coolness of the earth through the summer. The lower apartments, where the mosaics are preserved in situ, create an intimate archaeological experience. The contrast with Dougga is striking: up there the public monument, here Roman private life.

Dougga, ancient Thugga, is a World Heritage Site spread over 65 hectares of hillside. Bulla Regia, 40 minutes away, is famous for houses built underground. This is what deserves your time.
The best preserved temple on the site, dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, its columns still standing over the valley.
About 3,500 seats cut into the hill, with a view over the wheat fields and olive groves of the Tell.
A funerary tower more than 20 metres tall, older than the Romans, one of the few Numidian monuments still standing.
Living rooms dug below ground to escape the heat, with their mosaics still on the floor. Unique in the Roman world.
The price is for the whole car and the whole day, not per person. It includes the air conditioned vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Tickets and lunch are paid on the spot, and you pay the driver on the day with no deposit.

Dougga lies in the north west, far from the beach resorts. The further north you start, the shorter the drive, which matters on a day of nearly ten hours. Here are the driving times to the first stop.
